Noggin Theatre Company present, Fruitcake
Written and Performed by Alice Barry
Alice Barry captivates her audience in this delightful, moving one woman
show. Under the guise of a cookery demonstration where Della Dolan
shows us how to make ‘the perfect Fruitcake’ she divests provoking
memories to give a fascinating account of her life on an Irish farm. She
divulges a chequered past involving hardship, murder and intrigue but
most of all great sacrifice, realisation and love. Funny and poignant with
accessible visuals this play will make you laugh and cry and remind you
why life is ultimately rewarding and exciting for all its ups and downs.
Commissioned by Meath County Council Arts Office for Bealtaine
Festival 2010 it toured Meath, Cavan and Louth. Bealtaine produced and
toured Fruitcake to 25 venues nationally from Waterford to Donegal, Inis
Oirr to Dublin for the festival 2011 and the show has been delighting
audiences ever since. The show is theatre in a bag, literally, with a bag of
ingredients, one table and one chair being the entire set.
‘Alice Barry’s carefully written play has a further reaching ambition. The skill of the
writing is that there is never a sense of lurching gear changes being made to
encompass the various plot developments. It is an unexpectedly moving piece of
Liam Heylin, Evening Echo.
